Joe Kubert's Cornucopia of Shading
Hatching.
Cross-hatching.
Zipatone.
Craftint paper.
I own this unusual page of original artwork by the great Joe Kubert on which the gentleman employed all of the above techniques of shading. A number of overlays are involved, with drawing done on the layers of clear acetate film.
I have no idea what this artwork was ever used for. Maybe for instructive purposes, maybe at The Kubert School in New Jersey? Don't know. But it is definitely an interesting artifact.
The underlying base is some of the magical craftint board that I have written about in the past.
Then a planet and some small spheres are drawn on the first overlay.
A fleet of airplanes and more spheres are on the next overlay.
A gorilla's torso and the first bit of a monster spider show up on the next overlay.
Then the gorilla's head and hands come into view, as well as another portion of the spider.
The rest of the spider shows up and Voila!
The weird masterpiece is complete!
